Unafraid Two

I am not afraid
To step through
Into the blazing light,
To leave a life of shadows
That taught me to fear day.

But this darkness I called home
Will not fade so easily.
It’ll try to clutch me as its prize,
And stay behind waiting
While I manage to flee.

And sometimes I’ll want to stay
And I’ll seek out the shadows once more,
My home that for so long,
Made up what was me.

But I will kiss its black mouth,
Smooth my hand down its sleek skin,
One last time,
And turn to join night’s sworn enemy.

I am not afraid
To lay myself bare,
And see my scars of darkness
Be erased by the sun.

I am not afraid
Of a calm reality,
Of gentle eyes piercing mine.

I am not afraid
Of being free,
Of running wild in the day.

I am not afraid
To step through
Into the blazing light.

I am not afraid
To leave my life
Of light,
To join the creeping darkness
Slinking through the night.

But this light that will not fade
Will pull and tug
And try to bind,
Try to keep me as its prize,
While I run swiftly into black.

And sometimes I will long for
Days in which I could see,
And times in which the shadows
Did not rejoice to say my name.

But I will kiss day’s bright mouth,
Smooth my hand down its clean wings,
One last time,
And turn to join its sworn enemy.

I am not afraid
To crawl deeply into the ground
And use the darkness as a blanket
To snuff out the rays of light.

I am not afraid
Of boiling reality,
Of slanted eyes piercing mine.

I am not afraid
Of being free,
Of running wild into black.

I am not afraid
To leave my life
Of light.

  1. As you said on your FB page, I think the reason we, the readers are enjoying your poetry especially is because you key in on certain words or phrases, and repeat them throughout, which is different from your longer work. Like Nelia says, I also like the I am not afraid line repeated throughout.

    This one particularly struck me-
    I am not afraid
To crawl deeply into the ground
And use the darkness as a blanket
To snuff out the rays of light.

You are doing great with this!
